Etta Arizona Bradford

This portrait meant a lot to my family as the subject 'Etta', is my Great Grandmother, a descendant of William Bradford, passenger of the historic Mayflower, and Governor of Plymouth Plantation.  Only few photos of Etta exist in our family's possession.  In creating this portrait I had to use a very old and damaged sepia tone wallet 1 x 2 " size photograph as my main point of reference.  From my memories I drew upon characteristics such as her incredible 'light blue eyes' and related them to others who share this trait in my family.  When the portrait was complete, I gathered many of my closest relatives, most significantly my Mother and Grandmother to unveil what was to be a most powerful and meaningful body of work.  Within a few moments my Mother and Grandmother
began to openly weep.  Instantly this was to be a defining moment in my art career.  A rare moment in life when one can witness and experience the great impact a posthumous portrait can extrude from those who lovingly shared life and breath with their ancestors...

The model who poses here can be dressed up as a pirate, sultan, cowboy even Santa Claus... you'll see him many times!

Kristie

I had to capture my friend Kristie, another artist here in Laguna Beach...she's 'spiritual' and seeking her path.  She was once a nun and now is almost Buddhist...

About Me

My photo
Debra Schott
Laguna Beach, California, United States
"If you look behind a good artist you'll see square miles of canvas." I started on my professional artpath by Faux Finishing and painting murals in clients' homes....hoping to get those 'square miles' behind me! I took workshops at 'The Finishing School' on Long Island NY, and then studied mural techniques from the set designers of the Metropolitan Opera in NYC, I've included a few examples of my decorative painting in my blog and believe me when I say that whatever an artist puts in his toolbox is pulled out whenever it's needed! Clients were always challenging me, first by requesting mural elements and then more decorative finishes. I studied floral painting techniques and then started taking intensive workshops at the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown, studying color and impressionistic portraits. I got the portrait 'bug'...it's like a Pandora's box, once opened you can't get it shut... So after studying the form and color, I am now concentrating on the concept of painting 'light' ...
